Classic and Fusion - Tribal Style Bellydance
Benu Dance Company

Introduction to Tribal-Style Bellydance
Basic movements used in Tribal-Style BD are introduced and practiced. Class includes stretches and warm-up, simple drills of fast and slow moves, an introduction to zils (using basic middle-eastern rhythm patterns), and a cool down. Class is 1 hour. Wear simple, non-restrictive clothing.

Tribal-style Bellydance Technique 1
This class expands on movements and steps used in the introduction class. Emphasis on refining technique; leading and following skills. Pre-Req - Intro and instructors recommendation.

Tribal-style Bellydance Technique 2
This intermediate level class will focus on chorus and small group techniques. Pre-Req - Intro, Tech 1 and instructors recommendation.

Tribal-style BD Technique and Concepts
This advanced level class will focus on improving techniques and working on the concepts of this dance. Dancers will focus on making the dance a performance art.

Working with Props
This class rotates through veil, sword, baskets, slow and other specialty topics. Classes ½ hour.

Tribal Fusion Workout
This class builds on the movements learned in Tribal Basics. It is very intensive on core movement. Pre-Req - Technique 1 and teachers recommendation.
Thursday 7:30 -8:30 PM

Skirt Class
Learn to add beautiful skirt work to your Tribal Improve Language. 25 yrd skirt recommended.
Tuesday 7:00 - 7:30 PM
Saturday 9:30 - 10:00 AM

Monthly Focus Workshops
Each workshop will focus on a feature topic. These classes include problems solving exercises, a hand out explaining the topic, and in depth discussions. These workshops are open to any (even dancers from other troupes) dancer wishing to develop skills and master the dance.

June 27 - Creating Performance Sets

July 25 - How slow can you go? Part 2
New slow combo’s and technique

Holidays / Snow Days
It is a good idea to check for closings due to holidays and snow days. We will be closed for 2 days for Thanksgiving, 2 days for Christmas, 4th of July, Labor day, Memorial day, and 2 days for New Years. If the schools are closed due to snow, the studio will also be closed.

Tempest 6:00 - 7:30 PM - Adventures in Steampunk - Steampunk is considered by many to be a subdivision of the Gothic Culture, or it's crazy next-door neighbor - regardless, it's an exciting and inspiring genre, blending Neo-Victorian, Science Fiction, and Fantasy that offers a lot of opportunity in the realm of bellydance fusion. But, once again, it's not about just having the look, but capturing the true quality and character of Steapmpunk in your movement and presentation. Students will explore 3 different "personas" through mini-choreographies utilizing original and fun combinations that resonate with the essence of Steampunk: "Airship Pirate", "Lady Adventurer" and "Coin-Operated Girl". In addition, students will not only learn about Steampunk music and fashion, but will be able to incorporate the material into thier own style with purpose, aremed with the building blocks to create and define their own personas.

Tim Rayborn - 7:45 - 9:15 PM - "Dance for the Music, Music for the Dance" - This dynamic workshop is for both dancers and musicians. It is geared to enable dancers to become more comfortable with dancing to live music, while aiding musicians to be more attentive and in synch with the dancers for a more cohesive and integrated experience.

Both classes are offered for $35 if registered before May 22. After May 22, classes will cost $45. Dancers Oasis Studio Members recieve $5 off price. Limited to 30 dancers.

Who Does She Think She Is?

Though feminism has made impressive strides in the plight of women, many are still forced to choose between careers and motherhood. This documentary looks at the realities of trying to balance work and family, especially in the lives of female artists. WHO DOES SHE THINK SHE IS? enlists the help of both experts and women who are trying to create art of various forms as they try to raise children. Director Pamela Tanner Boll worked as an executive producer on the Oscar-winning documentary Born into Brothels.

I am going to try and go to the 1pm show on Monday. Michele, I hope you can go? I immediately thought of you when I read the description. Or Jaevyn, laying on the floor of the dance studio. :-)

Mudslide

I had a fabulous time!!! The classes were fun, we learned some cane and zilling. The performances were fun as well, I especially enjoyed Troupe Duende's performance especially, they have spent a lot of time working with Unmata's stuff and it shows with a flair of their own. However we all know how much I love group improv! Siham sparkled as always and Masani spewed fire from her eyes and hips! The drumming was fabulous!! Tasso's was an incredible invasion!! Ziana was gorgeous as always and seeing all of the bellydancers strut their stuff was awesome. The place was so full you could hardly stand!! Oh and I got to kiss a couple of pretty greek boys, on the cheek. Hubby heard about that one!!!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year everyone on Benu Tribe!!! Barb and I had a great holidays. Barb is slowly recovering from her surgery. She is walking much better now and even starting to join us a little in classes. She is finding out how many muscles we use for each move that are in the ankle and foot, A LOT!! as she slowly begins to dance again!! We are hoping that she will be up to one slow number in our upcoming show "Just Desserts". Benu is also quickly filling up the calender for this next year!! Many of us will be at Mudslide in KC, Feb. 7. Some of us are also planning on Elevation in Golden, Colorado and Cues and Tattoes in Seattle, Washington!! I have never been to Seattle, so I am really looking forward to this event, especially as a chance to see Sabine, Amy Sigil, and Carolena again. This event seems made for us!! Benu as a troupe is working very, very hard on our Production "Just Desserts", I am so proud of all of our ladies and how they have truely stepped out of the BOX and are taking our improve to new levels. This show is definately not our typical stuff!! But it is definately all BENU!! We have Circus, women in history and fiction, witches and voodoo, and wonderful Desserts!! Bakalava, Dark Chocolate, Pecan Pralines, rich fudge, divine cheesecake and so much more!! The theme is Decadance and is scheduled the weekend of Marde Gra!! It will be a really big party!!
Looking forward to seeing everyone in the New Year!!

Elevation! April 17-19, 2009 in Denver: Registration is open!

Hay y'all,

Happy New Year, and Happy Elevation sign ups!

Elevation 2009 is the 5th year of our yearly belly dance festival. It is held in the small Western town of Golden, CO, nestled down into a valley and up against the Rocky Mountains, near Denver.

The event venue is across the street from our store/studio Paprika, where some of the smaller classes will be held.
There are also hotels in the next block.

A beautiful river runs through the heart of town, and the largest brewery in the world offers free beer just 2 blocks away!

There will be 3 full days of classes, 2 excellent shows with pro sound, lights, DJ, and VJ.
The Fri night show is catered with a fabulous Middle Eastern buffet, and there will be attendee performances, and the Sat night show is for the teachers and a few special guests.

We hold our shows in a large club, and this really is one of the most FUN events around. It's not an event where everyone is made to sit quietly in a theater and suffer through long and drawn out shows. We have fun and dance and laugh and cut up and have a few dranky-dranks. We've got an excellent DJ of Indian decent from the Island of Trinidad that keeps us all jumping to his Chutney Soca and Bangin Bhangra rhythms.

This year is more family friendly with Kids drumming and dancing classes as well as babysitters for the Fri and Sat night shows.

There will be a great bazaar with Merchants from all over the country selling items from all over the world.

We at Dance Arabesque have an announcement that we are excited about....We have a new name and will be updating our website to correspond too.....We will now be called Tribal Muse, the nine Muses danced and sang to the music of the God Apollo and presided over the Arts and Sciences as a source of inspiration especially for Musicians.

We will be 14 Muses or more??and will dance to mostly inspire a great deal of fun and activities! We are looking forward to an exciting and wonderful dancing new year! We look forward to seeing you all this spring!

Possibility of a Workshop with Benu in Lincoln

Hi everyone,
Benu Dance company is putting on a show!! We are calling it "Just Desserts: An Adventure in Decadance" There is not a bit of our traditional stuff in it!! It will be better than "Out of the Box". The Show will be the evening of Saturday, February 21 and will be held at the Lincoln Woman's Club. We already have the site for Friday and all day Saturday, so we were wondering if anyone would be interested in a workshop with Benu. A couple hours in the morning and a couple hours in the afternoon with the choice of coming to the show that evening. So what do you think - the workshop would go towards paying for the site so that we don't have to deduct that cost from the show, for which all proceeds are going to "Every Woman Matters" a charity that makes sure all woman can recieve testing and treatment for Breast and Cervical Cancer, a cause close to many of our hearts.

for 2008! We are playing the The Slowdown in Omaha. Between the Leaves
opens, then us at 8:45, then Alacartoona.

It is an EARLY show... we are taking the stage at 8:45 so don't be late.

The cover is only $5.00 and the venue is a cool place. Dance pit, balcony
for people who don't like the crowd, a bar and seating farther back so you

Hats for Sale

(Does anyone else remember that children's book with the monkeys that stole the hats?)

There is a hat/vintage clothing sale outside the Noyes Art Gallery on 9th st. Everything is $2!!!!!

There is a pair of while ghillies for $2. maybe a size 8?

I got an awesome, awesome hat. It looks turkish in shape, but it has blue silk on it and flowers. I plan to wear it with my pink tunic with the embroidered flowers.

The guy in the gallery said they would leave the stuff out tonight for the First Friday crowd, so if you're out, check it out!

Sher need your good thoughts

One of our dancers, Sher, needs all the good thoughts she can get. She is going through a very difficult time. Her mother is dieing. The nurses think she maybe has a week at the most. But even worse news, her husband had a heart incident on Monday of last week and this morning he is going in for at least 4 by - passes, maybe more. Randy is her rock and she really needs your thoughts and prayers.

Some Confusion About the Latin-Flamenco Fusion Workshop

Hi Everyone,
There seems to be a little confusion about the workshop this weekend. This is a fusion workshop as it will fuse Latin and Flamenco stylings and skirt work with some of the moves and improv that we already do. This will be a new style of dance. You need a big skirt, preferable 25yrds but atleast a 10yrd skirt for the class. We will be blending skirt work with moves we already know and working with them in an improv format. If people really like it, and I really think you will, we will develop this fully into a new style addition for Benu and other tribal improv groups. Or the moves and combinations can be taken individually to be added to choreographys. The skirt work is very powerful and gorgeous, the feel is very passionate Flamenco and Latin. We will also be added some latin foot work to this style. So, yes, you need the big skirt, but no you do not need shoes.

Amy Sigil of UNMATA!

Moves You’ve Hopefully Never Thought of Before - This fresh-approach workshop will reveal the secrets of UNMATA’s modern bellydance fusion. Amy will describe, demonstrate, and drill some of the striking stuff you’ve only seen the girls whip out on stage.

Each movement will emphasize specific technique and capture the nuance of UNMATA’s popular style. Because this class is designed for the intermediate to advanced dancer, a sufficient understanding of balance, timing, and isolation skill is prerequisite. Curriculum can easily be adapted for cabaret or tribal disciplines.

Overlaying Isolations, Amy Sigil Style- Amy’s Art of Overlay is at the heart of this intermediate to advanced bellydance workshop aimed to add expressive layers and distinction to your dance style. Meaning in motion - This class uses the Delsarte system to study some of the most basic movements that occur in dance, and see the meaning within them. Forward and back, side to side, diagonals and curves, all have universal symbolism. Working with those meanings makes choreography easier to create, and to interpret. Goats and Bellydancing

Miss Tilly's was great fun yesterday. My family was delighted with the cheese I brought home and I was delighted with a fun afternoon in the Iowa countryside doing some dancing. (And eating and drinking.)

I put some pictures up. I'll caption them, but I'll summarize - Dance Arabesque looks great, Michelle can't stop teaching classes, Iowa wine is serious business, Lea loves trees, and goats are cute, then they try to eat your Melodia pants strings (Goat, do you KNOW how much those cost?!).

Yes, I am so sorry, we are going through a few webchanges and the pdf and info for TDF'08 is gone!!! Where you might ask?? I just don't really know!!! We wanted to change the colors, purples and teals was so In Your Dreams, but oranges, yellows and reds are so BENU - after all it is a phoenix!!!!!!!!!! So, I like the colors, but where everything else went???????????? So, we will be taking registrations until September 30 for all those inconvienced by the website changes. so... i don't know if you know this but... i hang out with you guys for fun... so when it comes to super-ultra-hip nighlife... i'm not exactly the authority... so.... any ideas???? of course i'm going to highly recommend a dance class with lincoln's very own benu... and i'm going to see if she'd be willing to meet jaevyn.... she's his FAVORITE! I don't know how long she'll be in or why... maybe she's got a show?!!?! (i intend to find out)

Barb and Her Ankle

Sounds like a bad novel, which in many ways it is. I am seeing a surgeon September 10th and have scheduled surgery for September 16th to tighten and reattach a loose, stretched tendon on my right leg ankle area. I am told I will be in a cast for about 6 weeks and then another 6 weeks to rehab. In the meantime, classes will go on as usual, but I know Michele will need your help and caring as she will have to cope with pitiful me as well as deal with the studio. I have ordered videos and new music to keep me occupied and I hope to think/create new and wonderful things for you all to try!

I am pondering an idea and would like some imput. Female figures that intrigue you. Do not have to be real, or current, can be if you want but anything from Zena warrior woman to Wonder Woman, to Hera to Cleopatra, to Hilliary to whomever. I am curious as to what you think and a short statement as to why.

I am contemplating some show themes so that's why I'm asking!

Howdy Great Plains dancers,

I will be coming to Kansas this August to film a new instructional DVD shooting in Wamego, Kansas ( near Manhattan, Kansas) from August 20-22, 2008.

I’m looking for a dancer(s) who lives in the area that might have some time to volunteer on the shoot as a part-time or full time production assistant.

The job or jobs would entail a few general aspects: assistant for hair/make-up, acting as a “script girl”- keeping track of dialogue and what segments were shot; helping out with wardrobe, assisting director Steve Balderson or myself with small tasks.

There is no pay, you would get credit as a production assistant both on the DVD box and within the program, you will receive finished copies of the DVD, ( and other DVD’s and swag in trade for your service!) and your meals will be taken care of. If time permits, we could possibly trade a private lesson or two as well…

Mongol (the movie)

The costumes are incredible - I want his wife's coral earrings! And I want to make his battle armour into a belt! (Or have Lana do that for me...) And there were some fun hairstyles too - particularly on the Chinese women outside of Ghengis Khan's cell. I will have to look into those hairstyles - almost like horns covered with ribbon. When Khan's wife buys his freedom in China she throws a kuchi necklace on the ground at the guards. :-)

Sorry to suggest this on the last day - I wish I had known how incredibly inspiring the costumes would be - I would have recommended it sooner. There are 3 shows tonight - you could do early or late and still make it to class. :-)

I was forwarded this message regarding the LCP's costume sale. I know that we all get our bits and bobs at things like this, please check it out. I intend to be there!

On Saturday, August 2, 2008 from 10am-5pm the Lincoln Community Playhouse is having a costume sale. They recently inventoried costumes accumulated over the past 50 years or so, and will be selling all sorts of period costumes, accessories, fabrics, and design patterns. Everything will be very reasonably priced, so come on out (LCP is just South of 56th and Normal Blvd) to get an early start on your Halloween costume, or re-stock your "dress-up" box.

My “Nebraska Bellydance Spectacular” tribe was just kind of hanging out collecting dust, so I thought I’d change it up to be a little more useful.

That tribe is now “Raqs Nebraska”. I thought it would be a good central location for all of us to post our events, shows, workshops, classes, etc. and to attract interest from there to our individual tribes and/or web sites.

Antelope Park

Hey Everyone,
Yes, we are doing a performance at Antelope park this year. It will be August 16. The performance will run 1 1/2 - 2 hours. You will get to see traditional Benu and not so traditional Benu. A chance for us to show you what we can really do, besides all that ITS stuff. There will be group numbers, solos, traditional tribal, and not so traditional tribal, and fusion. The performance is ifree to all who wish to attend. Hopefully we will have lovely weather, as it will be outdoors at the Antelope Park Bandshell, so bring bug spray. Afterwards we will have our traditional Pot Luck. All are welcome to attend. If you wish to pot luck with us bring a dish to share and drinks for yourselves. We will also have some live drumming, so maybe we can party after as well.

Workshops at Dancers Oasis Studio

Upcoming workshops are

June 28 - Musicality

July 26 - Tribal Drum Solos

August 23 - Shimmies and Layering

Workshops run from 10 AM - Noon on listed Saturdays.
They follow the regularly scheduled Saturday morning classes of
8 AM - Tribal Basics $10 one time fee
9 AM - Tribal Fusion $10 one time fee
Worhshops are $25
Entire morning - $35
Which all are welcome to attend.
Workshops are followed by a casual Stich and (Show)??? Where everyone brings projects they are working on to show off and get help with, or to share ideas, etc. Again, all are welcome, and there is no charge for the Stich and Show.

The Boutique is also open at these times. If you are visiting Lincoln and would like to visit the boutique on a weekend, please call ahead and we will see that someone can be here for you. And yes, we are still expanding the boutique and what it has to offer!!!

Adding some classes to the Studio Schedule

Hey everyone,
Just to let you know, we have added a few new classes to the schedule. We have added Tribal Aerobics and a new floorwork class. Tribal Aerobics will be an intense workout using tribal movements. This class will be on Thursdays from 5:30 - 6:30 PM. The new floorwork class will be for all levels and work on floor specific movements and strengthening excercises. This class will be on Wednesday at 7:30 PM. Also, come join us for Poi and Props/Specialty classes on Thursday at 6:30 PM and 7 PM respectively. Props class works with balancing (swords, baskets, trays), veils, and more. Also, please feel free to join the Tribal Fusion workout class on Thursdays at 7:30 - 8:30 PM. This class is an intense muscle work out for the entire body. Strenthening and building the muscles for really spectacular movement.

For making my first performance so FANTASTIC!!! I had a great time! And afterward, my friend took me downtown and we had an imprmtu photoshoot in a few parking garages.

Graduation and New Beginings

OK, so my baby, really my baby!! OK, so my baby is now 6'4" and 300 some odd pounds, but He's still my baby!! 6 pounds 3 ounces, 13 inches at birth just over 18 1/2 years ago!! Just graduated from High School!! I could have cried, OK I cried!! He gave me beautiful white tiger lillies during the ceremony!! He is such a wonderful young man and I couldn't be more proud!! Oh and yes I checked the Diploma for signatures and authenticity, because for a while there a few years ago, we really didn't think this would happen!! And in October he's going to college, to become a CHEF!! He's already a great cook, always coming up with new ideas and recipies, can't wait to turn him loose on the world!! OK, proud Momma!! Just really had to share it with all my wonderful dancer friends!!

WORKSHOPS (4 total)
Kahiko Style Hula Choreography with Carol Morgal (www.iahula.com)

African Dance with Melissa Kandido
Zills for Beginners with Isis (www.bedouinstar.com)

WORKSHOP FEES and NOTES
Each workshop is $25 pre-registered (by July 7, 2008) or $30 at the door
Receive a $10 discount when enrolled in all 4 workshops
Each workshop is an hour and a half in length
ALL Bedouin Star Bazaar events are OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

VENDORS
Tables are available for vendors for $30 each (large, rectangle tables). The only prohibited items for sale are alcohol and food. Information tables, for those wishing to distribute information but not sell items, are also available for $15 each.

EVENING SHOW
The evening show will begin at 7:30pm, doors open at 7:00pm
Tickets are $5 each
Dancers MUST attend at least ONE workshop to perform in the evening show

My biggest bear-hug thank you to the ladies of Benu who danced at Nebraska Bellydance Spectacular!!!! The show was a blast! And you all looked so beautiful. The live drumming was an awesome addition to the event. Wasn't the crowd fun? They were so responsive.
